CHURCH OF SAINTS NAZARIO and CELSO
It is one of the most important monuments of Asti
Romanesque architecture dating from the 11th –12th century.
Built in sandstone and brick, the lively alternation of colours,
geometric drawings in bands, checks and triangles laid out
with extreme precision make this building “one of a
kind”, especially after its recent restoration work.
Internally, the plastering has been restored
and painted in lime and the 18th century floor has been brought
back to light.
Stratigraphic tests performed in the
apse have revealed limited passages of a fresco provisionally
dating between the late 14th and early 15th century. Overall
the figure of Saint Catherine of Alessandria can be observed.
The current altar in painted scagliola
is work of renowned carver Francesco Solari of Verona, on
Lake Como, dating from 1760.
